I am deeply saddened by Richard’s passing, and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones. While I never saw Richard after college, I distinctly and fondly remember him to this day. He was warm, fun, smart and humorous and brought great joy to any conversation because he was engaged and interested in all topics. I was amazed by his ability to articulate thoughts only in the dim recesses of my brain into incredibly pithy, often witty, sometimes profound or inspirational statements. When talking with him, I remember feeling joyful even when the subject matter was serious because I was so enthralled by his curious nature and compassionate insights. Richard always listened to the rest of us even as we stumbled to express ourselves in his company. I know that this welcoming, gracious, and kind man will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
I am very saddened to learn of Richard’s death, and I send my sincere condolences to his family. Richard was a warm, wonderful person. Charismatic in a quiet way, he connected with you on a deep level, and was genuinely interested in what you had to say. Richard was a great communicator, smart, and funny as hell. He had a very impressive career as a writer and editor in the NY magazine world, at Vogue, Esquire, InStyle, New York magazine, etc., and he was editor in chief of Departures magazine for 17 years. I was touched by the many kind and loving comments about Richard in his obituaries, such as the editor of Town & Country who said Richard was “a mentor and friend and champion of so many.” All I can say is, “Yes, this is the Richard we all knew at Williams.” You are very missed by your classmates, Richard.
