He served in the US Army in the Korean War, from 1950-1953, Second Lieutenant, Signal Corp and was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco, CA. After the army, he worked for his father at their lumber yard in Portland, CT for 2 years before attending Stanford Business School in 1955. Graduated 1957 with his MBA. He chose not to attend his graduation so he could marry Yvonne C. Jensen (Stanford 1956) in the Stanford Memorial Church. He moved to Santa Monica, CA in 1964 to begin working for IBM selling 360 and 370 machines. THINK BIG was the sign in his office. He spent 58 years living in Santa Monica and enjoying the coastal lifestyle of sun and surf. In 1977 property was purchased in the Elk Meadows development, Ridgeway, CO, where family friends also owned. Thus, started almost yearly treks into Southwest Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains.
