  1. I met Andrew when I spent my junior year at Williams on exchange from Vassar. I got to know him in a course in African history in the Fall of 1971, taught by Professor Joe Harris. Classmate Sandy Read also took the course. While I don’t remember the topic of Andrew’s research paper, I’m almost certain that it related to his beloved country of Zimbabwe and its colonial history. Sandy’s work was on the Mau Mau Rebellion in Kenya and mine on Négritude, a literary and political movement among francophone African and Caribbean intellectuals in the 1930s to raise Black consciousness. I am sorry that nothing in his obituary was mentioned about his family for I was honored to serve as one of the witnesses at his wedding to his fiancée during our junior year at Williams. It is not surprising that Andrew had such an impact and illustrious career in the foreign service and in international diplomatic relations. Williams selected a number of students from the developing world, like Andrew Mtetwa, who were, or would be, rising stars in their home countries. The College offered a nurturing environment for their success, both inside and outside the academy. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in Zimbabwe and the international diplomatic community.
